Bible Verses About Prophecy

There are many Bible Verses About Prophecy worth knowing. Having said this, one might ask, “what is prophecy? or what does it mean to prophesy? In simple terms, to prophesy is to speak prophecy. Prophecy is the noun and prophesy is the verb. When asked for the basic definition of prophecy, we can say without doubt that “it is a message from God.” Thus, to prophesy is to proclaim a message from God. They one who carries-out this task is referred to as a Prophet. Even though foretelling is often associated with prophecy, revealing the future is not necessarily a must-be element of prophecy. However, due to the fact that God clearly knows the future, any authoritative word about the future must of necessity be a prophecy, a divinely inspired message from God.

In the Old Testament of the Bible, we can read about prophets who simply spoke their divinely received messages to a king or to the people (e.g., Samuel, Nathan, Elijah, and Elisha). In later times, God sent forth a series of “writing prophets.” The messages of the “writing prophets” are preserved in Scripture (e.g., Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, and Malachi). For most cases, the “writing prophets” would preface their utterances with words like “this is what the Lord says” (NIV) or “thus saith the Lord” (KJV). This is an indication that God had communicated something to the prophets who stood to speak directly for Him to the people. Let’s support this point by reading from 2 Peter 1:21 – “For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”

Bible Verses About Prophecy

Deuteronomy teaches us about two signs of a true prophet. First, a true prophet must not direct people to follow other gods. Second, when a true prophet speaks what he hears from God about the future, it will come to pass except God changes His mind (Jonah 3:10). God always backup the words of a true prophet and does not allow his words to fall on the ground without a reason. However, God remains the Sovereign ruler and sole decision maker. He does as He likes for the Scripture tells us that God is not a respecter of men. He commanded Prophet Jonah to proclaim the message that “In forty days Nineveh would be destroyed for its wicked and evil ways” (Jonah 3:4).

Prophet Jonah proclaimed the message and upon hearing it, the King, all his subjects, and even the animals in the land were forbidden to eat. The king called all his subjects to fast and pray earnestly to God as they abandon their wicked and evil ways with hope that God might change His mind about punishing them. God saw their sincerity and changed His mind about the punishment (Jonah 3:10). This did not make Jonah a false prophet. God even rebuked Jonah for questioning Him about the prophecy not coming to pass (Jonah 4:4). Thus, we are not very OK with the saying that “if a prophet’s prediction fail to come to pass, he is a false prophet.” A true prophet of God can proclaim a message that God has not spoken (Deuteronomy 18:22) but has allowed it to happen so (read 1 King 22:20 -25 ).

What does the Scripture say about Prophecy?

The Scripture tells us how God would often give the Prophet a message about something that would happen in the short term, to give him credibility on the more long-term message. A good example to better explain what we are trying to say here is that of Prophet Jeremiah when he told the leaders of Judah that the nation would be conquered by Babylon. Another “prophet,” a charlatan by name Hananiah, stood up against Prophet Jeremiah’s message claiming that God had given him a different message, thereby proving that Jeremiah was a false prophet. Upon hearing this, Jeremiah told Hananiah that within a year he, Hananiah, would be dead, and within a year Hananiah died (Jeremiah 28). This high level of prophetic accuracy in predicting the future gave more credibility to Jeremiah’s other prophecies.

In the New Testament of the Bible, John the Baptist proclaims that the Kingdom of God is near as the Messiah is already in the midst of Israel’s children. He further identifies Jesus as the Messiah meaning the “Anointed One” or “Promised Savior.” In the New Testament we also hear about Prophets and their accomplishments (1 Corinthians 12:27-31; Acts 13:1; Acts 11:27-28; Ephesians 4:11; 1 Corinthians 14:2,3; Ephesians 2:20; Acts 21:10; Acts 21:9; and Revelation 19:10). Still in the New Testament, we perceive Apostles walking in the prophetic role as they spoke directly and authoritative for God. The words that were spoken by the Apostles are preserved today in Scripture. Ephesians 2:20 points to the Apostles and Prophets as being the very foundation of the Church, with Jesus Christ in place as the cornerstone.

Facts about Prophecy

Behold, prophecy is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (Romans 12:6–8). Today, some people hold that the gift of prophecy continues while others hold that it ceased when the foundation period of the church was complete. 1 Corinthians 12-14 happens to be the longest New Testament passage relating to the gift of prophecy in details. Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit will be with His followers forever (John 14:16). Apostle Paul knowing the the Holy Spirit was to be with the followers of Jesus Christ for all times wrote saying that “The Spirit’s presence is shown in some way in each person for the good of all” (1 Corinthians 12:7). The manifestation of the Holy Spirit in us is perceived through its gifts for the good of God’s people (1 Corinthians 12).

Apostle Paul wrote much on the gift of prophecy and speaking in tongues to the Church at Corinth upon hearing that they were misusing the gifts. One problem they had was that whenever believers gathered, too many prophets were speaking at the same time. That is, they were interrupting each other to boot. Apostle Paul called them to order by saying that whenever they gather, at most two or three prophets should speak, and they should do so one at a time. Apostle Paul further calls on the other spiritually mature individuals in the Christian gathering to evaluate what the prophet says (1 Corinthians 14:29–31). Perhaps the best understanding here is that some believers in Corinth thought that they were getting a divinely inspired word directly from God, but they could have been wrong; therefore, they needed to submit their prophecies to the judgement of the Church.

What you should know about Prophecy

Unlike the Old Testament, if a New Testament prophecy is found contradicting the Scripture or the Revelatory Teachings of Jesus Christ (Gospel), such is considered contrary to sound doctrine and should be rejected. It is in this light that Revelation 19:10 tells us that the testimony of Jesus Christ is the spirit of prophecy. Hence, no teaching contrary to that of Christ should ever be welcomed by His followers. Also read the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ.

Revelation 19:9-10 – “Then the angel said to me, “Write this: happy are those who have been invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.” And the angel added, “These are the true words of God.” I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “Don’t do it! I am a servant together with you and with your fellow-believers, all those who hold to the truth that Jesus revealed. Worship God!” For the truth that Jesus revealed is what inspires the prophets.” Jesus said “And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many” (Matthew 24:11). Here, Jesus did not say “all prophets who will come after me are false” neither did He point to the end of the prophetic office. However, we are certain that any prophet who rises with a message different from the testimony of Jesus Christ is not of God.

Let no one deceive you in any way.
