In this article, we will explore the profound statement made by Jesus Christ, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth” (Matthew 28:18 NKJV). We will delve into the meaning and significance of this declaration, its implications for believers, and the power and authority bestowed upon us by Jesus (Luke 10:19). Join us on this journey as we uncover the depths of God’s plan for His people.
Jesus Said, “All Authority Has Been Given to Me in Heaven and on Earth” – Matthew 28:18
Understanding the Scriptures on Jesus’ Authority
The Source of Jesus’ Authority
Jesus’ assertion of all authority is not a mere boast or empty claim. It is grounded in His divine identity and the work He accomplished on the cross. Before we can fully grasp the extent of Jesus’ authority, we must first understand His relationship with the Father. Jesus, as the eternal Son of God, shares in the divine authority and power of the Father and the Holy Spirit. Together, they form the sovereign triune God, the creator and sustainer of all things.
Jesus’ Authority in His Earthly Ministry
During His earthly ministry, Jesus demonstrated His authority in various ways. His teaching carried an unparalleled weight and wisdom that left His hearers in awe (Matthew 7:29). He displayed His authority by forgiving sins, something only God has the power to do (Matthew 9:6). Jesus calmed storms, healed diseases, cast out demons, and even raised the dead, showcasing His dominion over all creation (Matthew 8:26; John 11:43).
However, it is essential to recognize that Jesus, in His humility, did not always exert His authority to the fullest extent. He willingly subjected Himself to the limitations of human form, experiencing obedience to earthly authorities such as His parents and civil rulers. Yet, even in His earthly state, Jesus possessed inherent authority that would be fully restored and expanded upon His resurrection and exaltation.
Jesus’ Universal and Unlimited Authority
After His resurrection, Jesus ascended to heaven and was seated at the right hand of the Father, where He was given the name above every name (Ephesians 1:20-23). It is in this exalted position that Jesus proclaims His universal and unlimited authority. He declares, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth” (Matthew 28:18).
This statement encompasses the entire scope of creation. Jesus’ authority extends beyond earthly realms to the heavenly realms as well. There is no place or realm in the universe where His authority does not reign supreme. His authority penetrates every sphere of influence, from the spiritual to the material.
The Implications for Believers
As believers in Christ, we are recipients of the authority and power entrusted to Jesus. Through our union with Him, we become partakers of His divine nature and inheritors of His authority (2 Peter 1:4). Jesus Himself affirms this truth when He says, “I have been given all power and authority, and now I give it to you” (paraphrased).
This authority empowers us to carry out the Great Commission, to make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that Jesus has commanded (Matthew 28:19-20). We have been commissioned to proclaim the gospel, to bring light into darkness, and to advance the kingdom of God on earth.
The Authority to Overcome the Enemy
One of the significant implications of the authority given to believers is the power to overcome the enemy. Jesus declares, “I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy” (Luke 10:19). This authority enables us to resist the schemes of the devil, to cast out demons, and to stand firm against the forces of darkness.
By operating in the authority given to us, we can walk in victory, knowing that no weapon formed against us shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). We have the privilege and responsibility to exercise this authority with humility, love, and discernment, always relying on the guidance and leading of the Holy Spirit.
Our Authority in Submission to God
While we have been given authority, it is essential to remember that we are also under authority. God, the blessed and only Ruler, is the ultimate source of all authority (1 Timothy 6:15). We are called to submit to His will and align our lives with His purposes. Our authority is not self-derived or autonomous; it flows from our intimate relationship with God and our obedience to His commands.
Submission to God also means recognizing and respecting the authorities He has established in this world. Whether it be parents, church leaders, or civil authorities, we are called to honor and submit to their leadership (Ephesians 6:1; Romans 13:1-7). Our exercise of authority should always be rooted in love, humility, and a desire to serve rather than dominate.
The Confidence of Believers in God’s Authority
As believers, we can approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, knowing that we have been given access to His presence through Jesus Christ (Hebrews 4:16). Our confidence does not arise from our own abilities or merits but from our trust in the authority and power of God.
In times of uncertainty, trials, or spiritual warfare, we can rest assured that the authority of Jesus is greater than any challenge we may face. We can boldly declare His promises, knowing that His word will never pass away (Matthew 24:35). Our confidence lies not in ourselves but in the One who holds all authority in heaven and on earth.
The Authority of Jesus: A Call to Action
Understanding the authority given to Jesus and subsequently to believers should lead us to a response of worship, obedience, and mission. We are called to boast in the Lord, acknowledging His sovereignty and power (2 Corinthians 10:17). Our lives should reflect the authority we have been entrusted with as we serve others, speak the truth, and share the gospel with boldness (Titus 2:15; 1 Peter 4:11).
In conclusion, the declaration of Jesus, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth,” is a profound truth that shapes the identity and mission of believers. It is a reminder of the power and authority we possess as we walk in union with Christ. Let us embrace this authority with humility, love, and a deep reverence for the One who has bestowed it upon us.

And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

1 Peter 3:18-22 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.
