What is the Significance of Egypt in the Bible

What is the Significance of Egypt in the Bible? Egypt, one of the grandest and earliest civilizations of the ancient world, figures remarkably in the Biblical narrative. Situated in the northeast corner of Africa, Egypt connects to the Holy Land via the Sinai Peninsula. In Bible times, the life source of Egypt was the Nile River, which provided the area’s only supply of water for drinking and irrigation. At the end of the rainy season, the river would swell and flood the Nile Valley, transporting nutrient-rich silt to replenish the valley’s fertility. The main crops produced in the region were barley, beans, spelt, lentils, onions, cucumbers, figs, and grapes. Egypt first appears in the biblical narrative in the story of Abraham when a severe famine struck Canaan, causing the patriarch and his family to sojourn in Egypt (Genesis 12:10–20).
While in Egypt, the Pharaoh took Sarah into his palace to be part of his royal harem, but he returned her to Abraham after God intervened.

After many years had passed, Abraham’s great-grandson Joseph was sold by his brothers into slavery, and he ended up in Egypt (Genesis 37:28). As the years went by, Joseph rose through the ranks to become Pharaoh’s right-hand ruler over Egypt (Genesis 41:37–57). Through Joseph’s mediation, Jacob and all his family came to settle in Egypt, escaping another famine (Genesis 45—47). For the next 430 years, the Israelites lived in Egypt (Exodus 12:40), growing in numbers but slowly declining from a position of favor into one of brutal oppression under Pharaoh (Exodus 1:1–15). When the Israelites could no longer endure the suffering in Egypt, the Lord God Almighty raised up Moses and Aaron to confront Pharaoh and deliver Israel out of bondage and into the Promised Land (Exodus 3—6:13).

What is the Significance of Egypt in the Bible?

In delivering the Israelites from captivity in Egypt, the Lord God sent a horrifying series of plagues that left Egypt in ruins (Exodus 7:14—12:30), together with one of the most spectacular miracles in the Bible, the parting of the Red Sea. All these culminate in Israel’s deliverance from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 14). But before entering the promised land, the Israelites wandered in the wilderness between Egypt and Canaan for forty (40) years. It is in the wilderness that they received the Ten Commandments and the Law of God (Exodus 20—23), the specifications for building the wilderness tabernacle (Exodus 25—28), and instructions for the consecration of priests and the administering of sacrifices (Exodus 29—30).

During the period of the kings, Israel interacted with the rulers of Egypt on many occasions. King Solomon married the daughter of an Egyptian king who is thought to be Pharaoh Siamun (1 Kings 9:16). While King Rehoboam resigned, the Egyptian King Shishak invaded both Israel and Judah and ransacked the temple and royal palace (1 Kings 14:25–26). Hezekiah called upon the king of Egypt for help when the Assyrian army besieged him in Jerusalem (2 Kings 18:21). Judah’s King Josiah was killed when he tried to stop Pharaoh Neco from passing along the coast to help the Assyrians. Pharaoh Neco also deposed King Jehoahaz and made Jehoiakim king of Judah instead (2 Chronicles 36:2–4).

More Facts

After the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC by the Babylonians, the Lord God Almighty spoke through the prophet Jeremiah, saying that the remnant of Jews still in Judah must stay in their land and not flee to Egypt (Jeremiah 42:19). In spite of Jeremiah’s track record of accurate prophecies, the disobedient people went to Egypt, forcing Jeremiah to go with them (Jeremiah 43:1–7). While in Egypt, Jeremiah prophesied the demise of Pharaoh Hophra by the Babylonians – judgment would come against the rebellious Judeans, regardless of their attempt to find safety in Egypt (Jeremiah 44:30). Note that there were still Jews living in Egypt during the intertestamental period. Their use of the Hebrew language had significantly declined. Some of the Jews living in Alexandria, Egypt, translated the Old Testament into Greek between 250 and 150 BC. This text, referred to as the Septuagint, became the Bible commonly used in Israel during the days of Jesus and the Apostles.

In the New Testament, Egypt served as a refuge for Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus when Herod the Great attempted to murder all the infant boys in and around Bethlehem (Matthew 2:13–23). Although the Bible does not give any details about their residence in Egypt or how long they stayed, it was probably only a brief time before they left to settle in Nazareth of Galilee after the death of Herod the Great. Behold, Egypt has a tremendous symbolic significance in the Bible. Israel’s redemption from Egypt is a picture of our deliverance from sin and death through faith in Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:13; 4:5; Titus 2:14). While initially considered a place of refuge in famine or threat, Egypt becomes a place of oppression and slavery. As New Testament believers, Egypt represents our old life of slavery to sin. All people are, by nature, slaves of sin, and Satan is a much harsher taskmaster than the Egyptian overseers. Under the weight of sin, the natural man labors powerlessly (Romans 7:22–25). The Lord God Almighty redeemed His people from slavery in Egypt by the blood of the lamb on the first Passover (Exodus 12), and He redeems us from sin by the blood of the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29; 1 Peter 1:18–19). In the same way that the Lord God called His people, the Israelites, out of bondage in Egypt, He calls us, His children, to “come out and be separate” and live holy lives in His kingdom (2 Corinthians 6:17).

What Does the Bible Say About Africa and Africans?

Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most-populous continent, after Asia in both cases. Behold, the Bible says a lot about Africa. In fact, Africa plays a vitally important role in God’s Plan of Salvation for Mankind. God’s beloved Son, Jesus Christ, the Promised Messiah, the Savior of the World, found refuge in Africa during his early years. That’s, baby Jesus and his parents sojourn in Egypt, a North African country. Notice that the African continent was the first to welcome the Messiah when His life was threatened in His place of birth. Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem and later moved to Nazareth. The Bible recounts how Joseph, Mary, and Jesus fled to Egypt in order to avoid Herod the Great’s slaughter of the baby boys at Bethlehem.

Africa and Africans were mentioned about 1417 times in the entire Bible. Of this, Egypt (Mitsrayim) was mentioned about 740 times in the Old Testament. In the Pentateuch, references to the words Egypt and Egyptians occur around 288 times. Egypt and Egyptians appear about 152 times in the book of the Twelve. It also appears in the book of prophet Isaiah about 40 times, prophet Jeremiah about 61 times, prophet Ezekiel about 47 times, and prophet Daniel about 7 times. Cush was mentioned several times in terms of geographical location and as the name of persons in the book of Jeremiah. Although debates still exist among scholars as to whether Cush, as a geographical location, refers to Africa or Mesopotamia, we are of the stance that it’s referring to Africa and persons of African ancestry. As such, Egypt and Egyptians as well as Cush and Cushites belong to the African continent. ‘Cush’ is an important way of identifying those of African ancestry by describing them according to the color of their skin. The word Cush in Modern Hebrew still means black.

Behold, Africa and Africans hold a central position and importance in the life and history of ancient Israel and the Bible, particularly in the book of Prophet Jeremiah. Africa and Africans contributed to the religious, political, and cultural life of ancient Israel. As such, Africa and Africans significantly contributed to God’s Redemption Plan through Jesus Christ. Unlike the slavery picture being portrayed by some Euro-American scholars in their Biblical exegesis, Ancient Africans are people of high esteem who acted heroically on several occasions in contributing to the realization of God’s redemption plan for humanity. For example, Ebed-Melech who is notable for rescuing the prophet Jeremiah from the cistern into which he had been cast to his death, and Jehudi who was an officer of King Jehoiakim were respected people of African ancestry (Jeremiah 38:7-10; Jeremiah 36:14).

Christianity in Africa

Behold brethren, the Bible is not a foreign book to Africa and Africans as some political agitators or anti-colonialists in Africa have claimed, and therefore Christianity is not a foreign religion in Africa. In fact, Africa has always been part of Biblical History. The terms Hebrews and Israel refer to some multi-ethnic group of people and those multi-ethnic people have an African strand. Take note of the identity of the mixed multitude that went out with the Hebrews in Exodus 12:38 – “And a mixed multitude went up also with them; and flocks, and herds, even very much cattle. ” This multitude was one that was containing mostly Africans, if not Africans exclusively. This is an indication that without the participation of Africa and Africans in the life and history of ancient Israel, the Bible would have not been in the shape it is according to the biblical authors, editors, and redactors. If Africa and Africans appear about 1417 times, more than any other group of people, continent, or nation except Israel, some importance must have been attached to them.

The continuous identification of people of African descent as ‘Cush’ is a vital way of identifying those of African ancestry by describing them according to the color of their skin. It possibly reveals the ancient Israelites’ appreciation of Africans. If the word Cush in modern Hebrew still means black, one would be correct to translate Cushites as black Africans in Jeremiah 13:23. An objective and clear examination of the Biblical texts that mention Africa and Africans (Cushites and Egypt) shows that the ancient biblical world was not prejudiced towards black people in their midst. And as such, prejudice towards people with black skin color is certainly post-biblical and unfamiliar to ancient Israel. Africans or Cushites were never racialized by the authors of the Bible whom the Lord God used in writing. In other words, they did not despise the people called ‘Cushites’ in a manner consistent with a racialist paradigm of modern society. Instead, they were regarded as people who were faithful like Ebed-Melech (Jeremiah 38:7-10), strong and reliable, and people worthy of great esteem who provided refuge to those who were unjustly oppressed (Matthew 2:13–23).

History of Christianity in Africa

Although Africa has been part of the Christian movement from the beginning, the earliest account of Christianity in Africa is found in one of the books of the Bible. The story revolves around a prominent Ethiopian eunuch on a journey who encounters one of the disciples of Jesus Christ. The disciple, Philip, preaches to and converts the eunuch and baptizes him in the River Jordan. Although there are no confirmed reports that this eunuch became an evangelist, many people believe that he took the religion to Africa thereby sowing the first seed of Christianity. However, the spread of Christianity in Africa is mostly attributed to Mark the Evangelist who is reported to have brought the religion to Alexandria, Egypt around the 1st or early 2nd century AD. Surprisingly, this northern region of Africa which is now predominantly Muslim was the first port of call for the introduction of Christianity to the continent. It was in Alexandria, a city in Egypt, that the first seeds were sown. Alexandria became a major point in the development of Christianity in Africa, with Mark leading the movement as a Bishop.

Legend has it that Christianity was brought from Jerusalem to Alexandria on the Egyptian coast by Mark, around 60 AD. This was around the same time or possibly before Christianity spread to Northern Europe. Once in North Africa, Christianity spread slowly West from Alexandria and East to Ethiopia. In the 4th century AD, the Ethiopian King Ezana made Christianity the kingdom’s official religion. In 312 Emperor Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire. The conquest of North Africa by Muslim Arabs in the 7th century CE led to the advance of Islam and a retreat of Christianity. The Muslim conquest of North Africa continued the century of rapid Arab Muslim military expansion following the death of Muhammad in 632 AD. However, Christianity remained the chosen religion of the Ethiopian Empire and persisted in pockets in North Africa. In the 15th century, Christianity came to sub-Saharan Africa with the arrival of the Portuguese. In the interior of the continent, most people continued to practice their own religions undisturbed until the 19th century. At that time, Christian missions to Africa significantly increased, driven by an antislavery crusade and the interest of Europeans in colonizing Africa. However, in places where the people had already converted to Islam, Christianity experienced little success.

All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. …

Jeremiah 43:1-47:7 – “When Jeremiah finished speaking to all the people all these words of the Lord their God, with which the Lord their God had sent him to them, Azariah the son of Hoshaiah and Johanan the son of Kareah and all the insolent men said to Jeremiah, “You are telling a lie. The Lord our God did not send you to say, ‘Do not go to Egypt to live there,’ but Baruch the son of Neriah has set you against us, to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they may kill us or take us into exile in Babylon.” So Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces and all the people did not obey the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Judah. But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned to live in the land of Judah from all the nations to which they had been driven— …

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you. Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. Has such a thing happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers? Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation. What the cutting locust left, the swarming locust has eaten. What the swarming locust left, the hopping locust has eaten, and what the hopping locust left, the destroying locust has eaten. Awake, you drunkards, and weep, and wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine, for it is cut off from your mouth. …

Isaiah 2:1-4:6 – “The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the Lord shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be lifted up above the hills; and all the nations shall flow to it, and many peoples shall come, and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord. …

Isaiah 18:1-22:25 – “Ah, land of whirring wings that is beyond the rivers of Cush, which sends ambassadors by the sea, in vessels of papyrus on the waters! Go, you swift messengers, to a nation tall and smooth, to a people feared near and far, a nation mighty and conquering, whose land the rivers divide. All you inhabitants of the world, you who dwell on the earth, when a signal is raised on the mountains, look! When a trumpet is blown, hear! For thus the Lord said to me: “I will quietly look from my dwelling like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.” For before the harvest, when the blossom is over, and the flower becomes a ripening grape, he cuts off the shoots with pruning hooks, and the spreading branches he lops off and clears away. …

Proverbs 25:15-28 – “With patience a ruler may be persuaded, and a soft tongue will break a bone. If you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit it. Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor’s house, lest he have his fill of you and hate you. A man who bears false witness against his neighbor is like a war club, or a sword, or a sharp arrow. Trusting in a treacherous man in time of trouble is like a bad tooth or a foot that slips. …

Proverbs 29:16-30:22 – “When the wicked increase, transgression increases, but the righteous will look upon their downfall. Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart. Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law. By mere words a servant is not disciplined, for though he understands, he will not respond. Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him. …

Proverbs 17:17 – “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

Proverbs 20:6-22:8 – “Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find? The righteous who walks in his integrity— blessed are his children after him! A king who sits on the throne of judgment winnows all evil with his eyes. Who can say, “I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin”? Unequal weights and unequal measures are both alike an abomination to the Lord. …

Psalm 87:1-92:15 – “A Psalm of the Sons of Korah. A Song. On the holy mount stands the city he founded; the Lord loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling places of Jacob. Glorious things of you are spoken, O city of God. Selah Among those who know me I mention Rahab and Babylon; behold, Philistia and Tyre, with Cush— “This one was born there,” they say. And of Zion it shall be said, “This one and that one were born in her”; for the Most High himself will establish her. …

Psalm 107:1-108:13 – “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. …

Proverbs 12:24-27 – “The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor. Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad. One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. Whoever is slothful will not roast his game, but the diligent man will get precious wealth.

Proverbs 11:14-18 – “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer harm, but he who hates striking hands in pledge is secure. A gracious woman gets honor, and violent men get riches. A man who is kind benefits himself, but a cruel man hurts himself. The wicked earns deceptive wages, but one who sows righteousness gets a sure reward.

Man puts an end to darkness and searches out to the farthest limit the ore in gloom and deep darkness. He opens shafts in a valley away from where anyone lives; they are forgotten by travelers; they hang in the air, far away from mankind; they swing to and fro. As for the earth, out of it comes bread, but underneath it is turned up as by fire. ...”
