What Does The Bible Say About Giving?

What Does The Bible Say About Giving? The answer to this question is worth knowing by all followers of Jesus Christ who are serious about pleasing God. The very act of giving is a well-known Christian virtue. As followers of Jesus Christ through whom we are made God’s children, we’ve all been called to give freely out of love our finances, time and other material possessions. Note here that giving is made acceptable before God only when it is done out of love. Giving without love in your heart will not benefit or release God’s blessings in your life. For the scriptures say that anyone who does not love does not know God but he who loves is born of God and knows Him (1 John 4:8). Behold brethren, we give because God first gave to us.

We can even say without doubt that all what we have comes from God. For the scriptures say that we can have nothing except God allows us to have it. In addition, we are told in the scriptures that everything on Earth and in Heaven belong to God Almighty (Deuteronomy 10:4; Psalm 115:16). Hence, we are simply stewards of His possessions. He has put us in charge of His belongings. And it is our duty to rightly and justly manage every single thing that is under our care for we shall give an account on the last day. It is the outcome of this account that will determine whether we are given Eternal Life in God’s Kingdom or Eternal Condemnation in the Lake of Fire. This then is a call for us to Sincerely Repent from our sins and start obeying the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ.

What The Bible Says About Giving

What the Scriptures say about Giving

An objective look at the Old Testament and the New Testament reveals God’s desire for His children to show compassion to the poor and needy. Jesus Christ clearly told us that the poor will always be with us (Mark 14:7; Matthew 26:11). In addition, Christ also pointed out that those who show mercy, compassion, and love to the poor, the sick, those in prison, the less privileged, and the needy are indeed ministering to Him personally and will all be rewarded accordingly (Matthew 25:35-40). We all know that poverty’s reach is both widespread and devastating. Hence, as God’s children, we should not be indifferent to those affected. Rather, we should stretch out a helping hand to them thereby reflecting the nature of our Heavenly Father. This spiritual truth and command is highly supported by the scriptures.

We can support our message by reading from Jeremiah 22:16 – “He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me, declares the LORD?” In addition, God instructed Moses to teach His people how to treat the poor and needy as we can read from Deuteronomy 15:10 – “Give generously to [them] and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.” The spiritual truth within this scripture is clearly portrayed in Proverbs 14:31b – “Whoever is kind to the needy honors God.” The first part of Proverbs 14:31 says, “He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker.”

What the Old Testament says about those who reject God’s command to help the poor

The Old Testament portrays the punishment reserved for those who reject God’s call to show compassion to the poor and the needy. Let’s read from Proverbs 21:13 – “If a man shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too will cry out and not be answered.” We can as well read from Proverbs 28:27 – “He who closes his eyes to [the poor] receives many curses.” It is important to understand here that among the many sins of Sodom that are listed in Genesis 19, her people were “arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy” as pointed out in Ezekiel 16:49.

What the New Testament says about Giving

In as a much as the Old Testament talks about taking care of the poor and needy, the New Testament is equally clear as to how we should take care of the poor and needy. A summary of what the Bible says about giving that pleases God can be read from 1 John 3:17-18 – “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with action and in truth.”

Summary

What is Giving?

Giving is the personal sacrifice of using something that God has given you to bless another person in need. We know of many forms of giving but the most common is the financial gift. It has to do with giving money for the advancement of God’s work and to those in need. However, God also provides us with the means of giving in other ways. That is, we can contribute to the advancement of God’s Kingdom and in assisting the poor and needy through our spiritual gifts, natural aptitudes, talents, and wisdom. This is actually what the Bible says about giving.

Why do we Give?

In simple terms, we give because all what we have was given to us by God (Deuteronomy 10:4; Psalm 115:16). That is, we give because God first gave to us. In addition to material blessings, God gave us His only Son, Jesus Christ, as a bond price for our redemption. This makes God the Ultimate Giver. Therefore, expressing our honor and gratitude for all that He has done for us through giving is quite acceptable. In addition, we reflect His loving and compassionate nature to others when we embrace giving as a lifestyle. And for sure, all those who give freely out of love will be rewarded mightily by God the Father Almighty.

In Genesis 14:19-20, we perceive Abraham giving a tenth (10th) of all His possessions to the High Priest Melchizedek. He did this in response to the victory that God gave him over his enemies and the success in rescuing his nephew, Lot. This very practice of giving a tenth was continued in the Mosaic Law, where God commanded all the children of Israel to give a tenth or 10% of their first fruits to the Levites who were the priest that served God in the Temple. Still on what the Bible says about giving, financial allowances were also given to orphans, widows, foreigners, poor, and needy (Deuteronomy 14:28-29).
