What Does The Bible Say About Gratitude?

What Does The Bible Say About Gratitude? Behold brethren, it is God’s will for us to always give thanks in all circumstances. You might be wondering why? This is simply because God is always in control of all circumstances whether they appear good or bad to the human eye. And for sure, He works out all things for the good of those who love Him. It is without doubt that showing gratitude has so many proven benefits be them emotional, mental, or physical. You’ll be doing yourself much good by embracing gratitude as part of your daily life. Gratitude is consistently and strongly associated with a state of greater happiness. Through an attitude of gratitude, people can feel more positive emotions, experience an improvement in their health, and relish good experiences, and deal with adversity while successfully building strong relationships.

The Bible clearly encourages us to cultivate a spirit of gratitude. Apostle Paul wrote in one of His letters saying, “always show yourselves thankful.” He himself demonstrated a thankful life in Christ through the joy he had in seeing God’s grace at work among the Gentiles. We must always be thankful because our Creator Himself has set a fine example in showing appreciation – even to mere human-beings. Let’s support this saying by reading from Hebrews 6:10 – “God is not unfair. He will not forget the work you did or the love you showed for Him in the help you gave and are still giving to your fellow Christians.”

What the Scriptures say about Gratitude

Thankfulness is a prominent Bible theme. This fact is supported by 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” This is a clear Biblical call to give thanks in all circumstances. In short, thankfulness should be a way of life for us who are following Jesus Christ. Christ is pleased with perceiving thankfulness or gratitude flowing from our hearts and mouths. By digging a little deeper into the scriptures, we find more advantages of being thankful. In addition, we also get to learn how to have gratitude in all circumstances life. Let’s start by reading from Psalms 136:1 – “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.” This scripture gives us two more reasons to be thankful: God’s steadfast love and constant goodness.

When we recognize the nature of our depravity, and the fact that, apart from God, there is only death (Romans 7:5; John 10:10), we natural get into a state of thankfulness for the life that He has given to us. It was out of love that God sacrificed His only beloved Son, Jesus Christ, for our sins on the Cross at Calvary. John 3:16 says, “For God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not die but have eternal life.” God’s Love for us is the greatest reason why we should be thankful at all times. It is out of this immeasurable and unconditional love that we are offered Eternal Life. Today, anyone who Sincerely Repents from his/her sins and starts obeying the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ is given life and saved from the Lake of Fire.

Facts About Christian Gratitude

As Christians, we’ve been called to be thankful in both happy and sad circumstances. In Psalm 30, we here David giving thanks to God for having delivered him from the hands of his enemies. Psalm 30:1-12 – “I will exalt you, O Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me. O Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. O Lord, you brought me up from the grave, you spared me from going down into the pit. . . . You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks forever.” Here, we perceive David giving thanks to God for the success he had in overcoming the challenges that were at hand.

Just as we previously mentioned, an attitude of thankfulness is not only portrayed during good moments or following victories. David demonstrates a good example of a person in distress who still gives thanks to God in Psalms 28:6-7 – “Praise be to the Lord, for he has heard my cry for mercy. The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy, and I will give thanks to him in song.” Although in distress, we still hear David giving thanks to God Almighty. All Job’s wealth and offspring were taken from him, yet he did not stop praising God. Job 1:21 says, “The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” Behold, the more Apostle Paul was persecuted, the more he praised God (2 Corinthians 2:14).
