Bible Verses About Confession are quite numerous and worth knowing. As humans, we face lots of troubles with the concept of sin. Although difficult to accept, the fact remains truthful that even when we are trying to be good, the flesh regularly subjects us to wrong thoughts, words, and actions. We might have the desire for eternal life which is obtained by following God and obeying the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ after a Sincere Repentance but still harbor jealousy, lust, tell lies, or even make hurtful comments against others. Knowing how hard it is to accept our failures, what can we say about confessing them? Truth be told, it is harder to confess them since we find it difficult to acknowledge them in the first place. Unfortunately, this holds even in our private prayers to God. But this is not how it ought to be. God wants us to start by acknowledging our sins and then confessing them. Let’s support this fact by reading from 1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” Confession is the key to peace of mind, physical and spiritual growth. By confessing our sins, Christ frees our minds from guilt and blesses us with true peace of mind. Remember that the peace which He offers is different from that offered by the world.

Bible Verses About Confession

The Biblical concepts that are expressed by the words “Confession” and “Confess” are deeply rooted to the idea of acknowledging something. The whole idea of willingly acknowledging something stems from the two verbs that lay behind the majority of occurrences of the words “Confession” and “Confess” in the English Bible for Hebrew yadaa [h’d”y] (in the hiphil root) and Greek homologeo [oJmologevw]. Some times, English Versions of the Bible such as the New International Version (NIV) translate these verbs as “acknowledgement.” Today, we have two distinct theological senses pointing to this root word. The first has to do with acknowledging or confessing of sins before God. The second on its part has to do with the acknowledging or confessing of faith (in God, Christ or particular doctrine).

What the Scriptures say about confession

Confession of Faith

All those who have been invited into a relationship with God through Christ have the responsibility and joy of publicly acknowledging the fact that they belong to God Almighty. At the dedication of the Temple, King Solomon publicly professed his faith to God in prayers as we can read from 1 Kings 8:33-34 – “When your people Israel have been defeated by an enemy because they have sinned against you, and when they turn back to you and confess your name, then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel.” In the New Testament, confession in the sense of acknowledging allegiances to the faith is more prominent. Willingly and sincerely confessing the “name of the LORD” (2 Timothy 2:19) or God’s name (Hebrew 13:15) is the mark of the believer. A genuine confession believes in the formula “Jesus is Lord”, or “Jesus is the Christ or the Messiah”.

Remember the words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 10:32 – “Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven.” These same words are found in Luke 12:8. This clearly reflects the secular Greek use of the word to denote the use of a solemn and publicly binding in a court of law that seeks to bring justice. Hence, the confession of Christ, then, is no private matter, but more of a public testimony or declaration of allegiance. However, such claims can be spurious and can easily be detected by a lifestyle incompatible with a genuine relationship with Christ as we can read from Titus 1:16. Sincerely confessing Christ, then, requires both a matching Christian theology and a matching christian lifestyle. Apostle John in his writing points out that the Pharisees refused to confess that Jesus was the Messiah and persecuted those who did (John 12:42).

Confession of Sins

The confession of sin is prominent in the Old Testament in as much as the confession of faith is prominent in the New Testament. However, both confessions appear in the Old Testament as well as the New Testament and should both be taken serious. The word that is most often used in the context of confession of sins is the Hebrew verb yada [h’d”y], whose literal translation could mean either to give thanks to God, to praise God or to confess sins before God. In some verses, it is not clear which is meant, but by correlating what comes before and after the verse, we can come up with something that makes sense. Confession of sin in the Old Testament had to do with the offering of animal sacrifices.

Today, animal sacrifice is a thing of the past thanks to our New Covenant with God through Christ, the sacrificial lamb of God who takes away the sins of the faithful. Confession of sins in the New Testament is usually expressed with the compound word exomologeo. Although confession of sins in the New Testament is mentioned in only 5 Biblical passages, it is not, however, to minimize its importance. Confession is highly significant in the widespread call to “Confess” our sins and turn to God just as John the Baptist pointed out in Matthew 3:6 – “They confessed their sins, and he baptized them in the Jordan.” All sin is ultimately sin against God, reason why we should regularly examine our conscience and ask for His mercy. We should also cultivate a Christ-like spirit of forgiving those who wrong us and asking for forgiveness from those we wrong.

What does the confession of sins accomplish?

A mere confession of sins is not all what God wants from us. He requires that we Sincerely Repent, and start obeying His commands and the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ. A sincere repentance has to do with turning away from your sinful activities and following the ways of God. In simple terms, we can define repentance as the very act of turning away from sin, rebellion, or disobedience to love and follow God in His light of righteousness. In a more general sense, we can perceive repentance as a willful change of mind and readiness to adopt a new way of life in Christ upon that comes from regrets of past conducts that were not pleasing to God.

Hence, we can say without doubt that true repentance is more of a ‘godly-sorrow’ for sin and the efforts put in place to take a new and opposite direction with the help of Christ. This is the type of repentance that renews a person’s heart and leads to fundamental changes in his/her relationship with God. Such locates you in God’s mercy and favor through Christ. Apostle Paul puts it this way in Acts 3:19-20 – “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you – even Jesus.” Repentance is not a way of saying that we become perfect because none is perfect but God. Even at our best in striving for a righteous life, we may backslide, reason why we should regularly seek God’s forgiveness.

The outcome of our confession of sins 1 John 2:1-2

1 John 2:1-2 – “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” This is the good news for those who have learned to confess their sins and decided to sincerely repent and turn to God for His Mercy and Favor. Brethren, do not let anyone deceive you with unsound doctrines. Behold, the Bible tells us that when God forgives our sins, He no longer holds them against us.

Pray at all times and always start your prayers by confessing your sins.
Ask God to forgive both the sins you committed knowingly and those you committed out of ignorance.
Always do your best to reflect Christ in your thoughts, words, and actions.
Study the word of God on daily basis as you pray requesting the Holy Spirit to guide you into all truths about the Kingdom of God.
Love God with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your strength.
