There is much that we’ll learn from the Best Bible Verses About Miracles. A person might ask, “what is a miracle?” In simple terms, “A miracle is an event which the forces of nature—including the natural powers of man—cannot of themselves produce, and which must, therefore, be referred to a supernatural agency (Fisher 1900, 9).” We can as well say that a miracle is a divine operation that transcends what is normally perceived as natural law. A genuine miracle is one that cannot be explained upon any natural basis. It is important to understand here that the miracles recorded in the Bible fall under several categories. There are supernatural acts of creation. Heaven and Earth together with all what they contain came into existence through God’s word (Hebrews 11:3); He merely spoke and it was done (Psalm 33:9).
There are miracles which involved a temporary and localized suspension of laws regulating nature. Such was manifested by Jesus when He calmed a ferocious storm on the sea of Galilee (Matthew 8:23-27). On another occasion, Jesus walked upon the waters of the Lake (John 6:16-21). There are miracles that involved the healing of man’s physical body. Jesus Christ made the blind to see (John 9:1-7), and the lame to walk (Acts 3:1-10). There are miracles which demonstrated Jesus’ power over death. Lazarus who had spent 4 days in the grave was raised back to life by Jesus Christ. In the same light, the resurrection of Christ is the very foundation of the Christian hope for Eternal Life (1 Corinthians 15:16-19).
Bible Verses About Miracles
Some of the great wonders of the New Testament age had to do with the expulsion of demons that had taken possession of human bodies (Matthew 12:22ff). This was a clear evidence that Jesus’ power was greater than that of Satan. There were also miracles that had to do with the exhibition of divine authority for the manipulation of certain material things. Remember how Jesus Christ transformed water into wine (John 2:1-11), and fed thousands as He multiplied a lad’s loaves and fishes. In addition, miraculous power was demonstrated in both the plant and animal kingdoms. Remember how Balaam’s donkey spoke with a human voice (Numbers 22:28). In an object lesson related to the impeding destruction of Jerusalem, Jesus destroyed a fig tree with words from His mouth.
What does the Scripture say about Miracles?
Questions and answers about Miracles
1) How can you tell if a miracle is of God?
There exist at least three Biblical tests to recognize a genuine miracle. They are as follows:
a) The miracle glorifies God
Miracles testify the fact that God is active in our world. That is, He is in our midst and has the full ability to disrupt the activities of nature in order to reveal His character as well as accomplish His Sovereign Will. It is important to understand here that the principal test of a miracle is: who receives the glory? You should be aware of people (such as Simon the sorcerer in Acts 8:9) who are more into boasting of their own greatness rather than God’s.
b) The miracle is accomplished through the help of the Holy Spirit
Apostle Paul tells us that one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is the ability to distinguish between spirits (1 Corinthians 12:10). Apostle Paul demonstrated this gift of discernment when he told Elymas, a Jewish Sorcerer, that he was the devil’s child, and an enemy of the light that comes from Christ (Acts 13:10). It is important to note here that it was through the Holy Spirit that Apostle Paul perceived the utter baseness of the man’s source of power. In the same light, we must look to the Holy Spirit for guidance regarding the sourceof a miracle.
c) The miracle stems from a righteous source
Jesus Christ with His own words said that we should be careful and prayerful because in the last days, false prophets will come and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect (Matthew 24:24). A person’s actions may be impressive and their words may sound true, but they are counterfeit if their lives do not reflect or bear good fruits.
2) Why did Jesus perform miracles?
Jesus performed several miracles for a good number of reasons. They sometimes led to faith in God. Just as many things, miracles produced both positive and negative results. The supernatural miracles of Jesus provided proof that He was the “Anointed One,” “the Promised Messiah,” and “the Sent One” from God Almighty (Acts 2:22 – 24). Although these miracles gave evidence of God’s victory over Satan (Luke 11:14 – 23), they were not designed to act as the primary goal of Jesus’ ministry (1 Corinthians 1:21 – 25). Miracles and wonders were pointed at by Jesus Christ as ways or signs of something deeper and more significant about God’s Kingdom (John 10:24 – 25, 38).
Jesus’ miracles were more like object lessons that demonstrated the vast scope of His power and authority. In simple terms, they revealed His authority over sicknesses, demons, and death (Luke 8:22 – 56). The ultimate goal of these miracles is to portray that Jesus is the Messiah (the “Anointed One” sent to save God’s children). All those whose hearts were opened to the things of God found the miracles and wonders of Jesus as a starting point that leads to God’s special gift of Eternal Life. And for those who resisted God, these very miracles were an end to themselves. It is for this reason that Jesus Christ refused to devalue his ministry to a kind of spiritual sideshow aimed at satisfying those who only wanted to see something sensational without getting its spiritual implication.
3) Why was faith necessary for Jesus to do miracles?
Behold, God has sovereign and unlimited power, but it pleases Him to exercise this power and authority in response to our faith. Note that Jesus did not force divine blessings on people who rejected Him. Most of Jesus’ miracles were performed for those who already believed and they moved some unbelievers into believing Him (John 11:45; 12:9 – 11; 14:11). It is also important to understand that Jesus was not performing miracles just for His own benefit.
4) Will we be healed if we have faith?
It is without doubt that Jesus taught His followers that faith prompts God to respond to our needs. At times, it is the faith of friends or family that God rewards. Occasionally, God’s work seems unrelated to anyone’s faith. The one and only explanation for this is God’s sovereign choice. However, Jesus never taught that faith automatically brings healing. An objective look into the 35 miracles recorded in the Bible that were performed by Jesus does not provide any formula guaranteeing healing.
However, as we go about our lives, miracles are happening around us – in our neighborhoods, schools, hospitals, and even in the workplace. We regularly see the critical ill healed, addicts turn their lives around, at-risk students excel, and opportunities opened for those in direst situations. Remember to inform others and to give glory to God each time that you experience a miracle in your life. The Bible says that if we give Him thanks for the things that He has done, He will do much more.
