Bible Verses About Poverty

There are many Bible Verses About Poverty worth knowing. They come in to answer questions like what does the Bible say about being poor? Luckily enough, the Bible has a lot to say about being poor. In addition, we have many examples of poor people in the Scripture. Since material wealth is not a sure indication of God’s blessing, being poor is not necessarily a sign of God’s disapproval. That is, a person can be physically poor in terms of wealth yet a candidate of God’s Kingdom. In fact, you can be poor in material things but rich in spiritual things (Revelation 2:9). Of course, we can say without doubt that sometimes being poor is simply the result of bad choices (especially on the financial plan).

The Bible clearly warns us that being lazy will definitely lead to poverty: “A little sleep, a little slumber, / a little folding of the hands to rest— / and poverty will come on you like a thief / and scarcity like an armed man” (Proverbs 24:33–34; cf. 6:11). Likewise, following wild dreams will lead to poverty as we can read from Proverbs 28:19 – “Those who chase fantasies will have their fill of poverty.” In the same light, failing to heed wise advice will also lead to poverty as we can read from Proverbs 13:18 – “Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction.

Bible Verses About Poverty

What does the Scripture say about Poverty?

There is much to learn from the Scripture about poverty. In as much as the Bible portrays wealth as a blessing from God in certain instances, it also portrays poor people as having been blessed. In some instances, it also portrays many who are rich from a negative point of view. Behold, Jesus Himself was poor in terms of the material things of this world. The truth is that Jesus was not having a home or a “place to lay his head” (Matthew 8:20). The disciples and most of Jesus’ followers were poor, at least in worldly terms, but spiritually rich in the the things of God’s Kingdom. The disciples even went to the extent of abandoning all they had in terms of material wealth to follow Jesus Christ. In fact, they gave up all they owned and placed their full trust in God for the provision of their needs.

Jesus Himself said that the poor will always be with us (Matthew 26:11). Hence, we can say with all confidence that there is no shame in being materially poor but spiritually rich. In this light, let’s put up an attitude which is more like that of the writer in the book of Proverbs who said, “Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread” (Proverbs 30:8). Just as we previously mentioned, the rich are negatively portrayed in some Biblical instances. It is important to understand here that wealth itself is not evil as we can point to wealthy Biblical figures who walked in the light of God’s presence like Abraham, Job, and King Solomon who happens to be the richest king to have ever lived. The problem with most of the rich people is that they tend to love their wealth more than God.

What Jesus said about being poor and being rich

Jesus Christ declared, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” (Mark 10:23). This is a statement that Jesus went further to repeat in the next verse. This gives birth to the question, why did Jesus make such a shocking statement? He made this statement obviously because the rich tend to love and trust in their wealth more than they do with God. This is to say that wealth is more likely to pull us away from God if we are not careful. The story of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19–31) that was narrated by Jesus displays the temporary nature of material riches and the permanent nature of spiritual riches. In the story, Jesus tells us how the rich man enjoyed all the luxuries of this life but spent his eternity in hell fire because of his greed and covetousness.

On the other hand, Lazarus suffered the indignities of extreme poverty without failing in his trust, faithfulness, and hope in God. Hence, he was comforted in heaven forever. That is, Lazarus was given Eternal Life. Behold, Jesus Christ Himself left His heavenly throne in order to take the lowly form of a poor man. Let’s get what Apostle Paul says of Him by reading from 2 Corinthians 8:9 – “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” In the same light, we ought to follow Jesus Christ by taking up our cross (Luke 9:23). We should give God the first place in our lives. Allowing anything to come before Him is moving away from His presence. When we seek Him first, the other things will follow (Matthew 6:33).

Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. Lamentations 4:1-5:22 – “How the gold has grown dim, how the pure gold is changed! The holy stones lie scattered at the head of every street. Even jackals offer the breast; they nurse their young, but the daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. The tongue of the nursing infant sticks to the roof of its mouth for thirst; the children beg for food, but no one gives to them. Those who once feasted on delicacies perish in the streets; those who were brought up in purple embrace ash heaps. …

No one enters suit justly; no one goes to law honestly; they rely on empty pleas, they speak lies, they conceive mischief and give birth to iniquity. And if the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, when the Lord your God blesses you, because the place is too far from you, which the Lord your God chooses, to set his name there, then you shall turn it into money and bind up the money in your hand and go to the place that the Lord your God chooses and spend the money for whatever you desire—oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves. …
