Bible Verses About Sacrifice

There is much to learn from the Best Bible Verses About Sacrifice. Sacrifice is undoubtedly part of the Christian faith. In Christ, we sacrifice our lives on a daily basis as we live with the impact of His Ultimate Sacrifice on the Cross at Calvary. John 3:16-17 says, “For God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not die but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to be its judge, but to be its savior.” We can perceive this as the greatest sacrifice that God has ever made for mankind. Out of love, He handed over His beloved Son, Jesus Christ to be persecuted, maltreated, and punished for the sins of mankind. That is, Jesus Christ became an atonement sacrifice for our wicked and evil ways.

Although Christ had no sin of His own, He willingly gave up His life out of love so that all who believe in Him can live. Today, any who Believes in Him, Sincerely Repents, and starts obeying His Teachings is set apart to benefit from God’s special gift of Eternal Life. Also, all those who are in Christ are saved from Eternal Punishment in the Lake Of Fire. It is important to understand here that love is the quality that makes our sacrifices acceptable in Christ before God’s Holy Throne. Without love, our sacrifices are disgusting before God. The Bible states that anyone who does not love does not know God because He is love. In this light, we should Love God with all our existence and also love our neighbors as we love ourselves. By so doing, we are made children of God through Christ Jesus.

Bible Verses About Sacrifice

Although making a sacrifice isn’t easy, it reminds us that as followers of Jesus Christ, we need to hold loose to the things of this world. Behold, Heaven is our true and permanent home. That’s why everything that we give up on Earth is temporary compared to eternity. There are four sacrifices that we can make in response to Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice for us. The first has to do with the sacrifice of our lips as we can read from Hebrews 13:15–16 – “‘Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise – the fruit of lips that confess his name… for with such sacrifices God is pleased.’

The second has to do with the sacrifice of our lives as Apostle Paul points out in Romans 12:1 – “‘Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy [because of all that Jesus has done for us through the sacrifice of himself on the cross], to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship.’” God desires that we offer all of our lives (our time, love, mind, emotions, desires, sexuality, mouth, ears, thoughts, words, and actions) to Him. The third is the sacrifice of our loots. Apostle Paul invites us to be generous enough in contributing to the needs of others (Romans 12:8). Generously giving is a sacrifice that pleases God (Hebrews 13:16). The fourth is the sacrifice of our love (Romans 12:9-20). Hebrews 13:16 says,  “‘do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased’

What does the Scripture say about Sacrifice?

1. Sacrifice doesn’t replace obedience (1 Samuel 15:22)

1 Samuel 15:22 – “But Samuel replied: ‘Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.” A significant number of Christians sacrifice their time, money, and energy to do good works. While these are good acts, we must be careful not to let such take precedence over our obedience to the teachings of the Bible. It is important to understand here that a sacrificial gift to the Lord is honored as long as we are obeying His commandments and teaching others to do same.

2. Sacrifice cost something (2 Samuel 24:24)

2 Samuel 24:24 – “But the king replied to Araunah, ‘No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”” It is important that we understand here that a sacrifice may be freely given, but it is not a genuine or acceptable sacrifice before God if it means nothing to us. Each time that we feel the pain of our sacrifice, we know that we are truly giving up something important and worth accepting by God. As we move towards spiritual maturity, we turn to offer more sacrifices freely to God due to our understanding of His grace in our lives.

3. Sacrifice is an everyday occurrence (Romans 12:1)

Romans 12:1 – “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Apostle Paul in his writing to the Romans is inviting us to offer our bodies on a daily basis as a living sacrifice to God Almighty, Father of Creation. Although God doesn’t forces us to obey Him, He longs to see us choosing His ways over our earthly ways. Note that our sacrifice of daily living for Christ as we follow His ways is one that comes with an Everlasting Reward.

4. Sacrifice can be a broken heart (Psalm 51:17)

Psalm 51:17 – “My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.” Sincerely seeking to face of God in repentance and with the desire to follow His ways is a sacrifice that He will never turn away. The truth is that God wants us to humbly come to Him and have our sins cleaned through Christ. Thus, when we humble ourselves and seek His help, we are likely to find Him.

5. Sacrifice is pleasing to God (Hebrews 13:16)

Hebrews 13:16 – “And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.” As followers of Jesus Christ, it is our duty to do good to others even though they don’t always return the favor. Christ tells us that our reward is reserved in Heaven and that we should never be tired of loving others and doing good to them. That’s why we should perceive the sacrifice of our good works and sharing of our resources with others as good works done to God and not to man. God the Father Almighty is pleased to see us doing good things to others and not just living selfishly.

6. Sacrifice comes through thanksgiving (Hebrews 13:15)

Hebrews 13:15 – “Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.” Each time that we are thankful in Christ, we are giving God an acceptable sacrifice. This is a special sacrifice to God when we display an attitude of gratitude for His faithfulness to the world and to those who belong to Him. That is why as believers, we should cultivate a daily attitude of thanksgiving for all that God has done and promised to do.

7. Sacrifice ultimately was paid through Jesus Christ (Romans 3:25)

Romans 3:25 – “God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith.” Note that the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ washed the sins of all people once and forever. That’s why after Jesus’ death and Resurrection, there was no longer a need to sacrifice animals. Get it once and for all times that it was finished on the Cross at Calvary. By putting our trust on Jesus Christ, His blood shed covers us and washes away our sins so that we don’t have to pay the price of sin which is death. That is, in Him, we no longer have to pay the penalty for our sins – a penalty that we would have never be able to pay on our own.

8. Sacrifice your life (Romans 12:1)

Romans 12:1 – “‘Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy [because of all that Jesus has done for us through the sacrifice of himself on the cross], to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship.’” As children of God, we’ve been called to offer our lives as living sacrifices to Him. That is, we’ve been invited to sacrifice our own wants and needs for the advancement of God’s Kingdom. Also, to sacrifice our whole existence in pleasing Him, giving Him glory, praise, and worship. We do all these in Christ who accomplished everything on the Cross at Calvary.
