God And Sudden Death

Discover God And Sudden Death. Does the Bible recognize accidental killing and is a person to be held responsible for it? Such are questions regularly asked by Christians when faced with accidental killing. However, the Bible does make a distinction between premeditated murder and accidental killing. Deuteronomy 19:1-3 says “When the Lord your God has destroyed the nations whose land he is giving you, and when you have driven them out and settled in their towns and houses, then set aside for yourselves three cities in the land the Lord your God is giving you to possess. Determine the distances involved and divide into three parts the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that a person who kills someone may flee for refuge to one of these cities.”

In addition, Deuteronomy 19:4-7, 10 says, “This is the rule concerning anyone who kills a person and flees there for safety—anyone who kills a neighbor unintentionally, without malice aforethought. For instance, a man may go into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and as he swings his ax to fell a tree, the head may fly off and hit his neighbor and kill him. That man may flee to one of these cities and save his life. Otherwise, the avenger of blood might pursue him in a rage, overtake him if the distance is too great, and kill him even though he is not deserving of death, since he did it to his neighbor without malice aforethought. This is why I command you to set aside for yourselves three cities. Do this so that innocent blood will not be shed in your land, which the Lord your God is giving you as your inheritance, and so that you will not be guilty of bloodshed.”

What The Scriptures Say

It is important for us to understand that the procedure in Deuteronomy 19:1-7, 10 was devised to accommodate the children of Israel under the Mosaic Law. New Testament saints, however, are to obey the laws of the nation in which they live. This is supported by Titus 3:1 which says, “Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good.” Therefore, if a Christian were to accidentally kill someone today, he/she should not flee, but trust God to vindicate him/her as he/she proceeds through the normal legal procedure.

Joshua 20:1-9 – “Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘Appoint the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you through Moses, that the manslayer who strikes any person without intent or unknowingly may flee there. They shall be for you a refuge from the avenger of blood. He shall flee to one of these cities and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city and explain his case to the elders of that city. Then they shall take him into the city and give him a place, and he shall remain with them. And if the avenger of blood pursues him, they shall not give up the manslayer into his hand, because he struck his neighbor unknowingly, and did not hate him in the past. …

Deuteronomy 19:1-10 – “When the Lord your God cuts off the nations whose land the Lord your God is giving you, and you dispossess them and dwell in their cities and in their houses, you shall set apart three cities for yourselves in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess. You shall measure the distances and divide into three parts the area of the land that the Lord your God gives you as a possession, so that any manslayer can flee to them. “This is the provision for the manslayer, who by fleeing there may save his life. If anyone kills his neighbor unintentionally without having hated him in the past— as when someone goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and his hand swings the axe to cut down a tree, and the head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbor so that he dies—he may flee to one of these cities and live, …

What Does The Bible Say About Accidental Killing?

Fools Talk Too Much Quote

Fools Talk Too Much Quote

Fools Talk Too Much Quote. The Bible clearly warns us against talking too much or being overly talkative. In fact, the Bible tells us that a fool can be recognized by his many words (Ecclesiastes 5:3). Ecclesiastes 10:14 adds that a fool “multiplies words.” Christians should understand that the Bible discourages the use of an abundance of words where a few would suffice. Proverbs 17:28 says, “Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.” Behold, those who feel compelled to give utterance to every thought in their heads usually end up in trouble. Proverbs 10:8 openly describes the overly talkative person as a “prating fool” (NKJV), a “babbling fool” (ESV, NASB), or a “chattering fool” (ISV) who is on his way to ruin. Such a person is contrasted with one who is “wise of heart.

Talking too much leads to sin as we can read from Proverbs 10:19 that says, “When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.” Truthfully speaking, the wise person refuses to talk too much. Rather, he fears and honors the Lord God Almighty. He listens to the Lord and obeys His commands. He follows the example of Mary, “who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said” (Luke 10:39). It is important to understand that when our mouths are full of our own words, we have little time or interest in God’s words. Talking too much is a sign or a clear indication that we are listening too little. That is, we are more focused on passing a message than receiving one. As Christians, we should talk less and listen more.

Fools Talk Too Much Quote

The Bible clearly makes us understand that restraining our lips is an indication of wisdom and humility. Talkative people often do not take the time between their many words to carefully and wisely choose what to say and what to hold back. Today’s modern culture offers numerous avenues through which we can express ourselves verbally. Cell phones, social media, blogs, and call-in radio all enable us to keep up a constant stream of chatter. But how much of our talking is really important or edifying? Ephesians 4:29 says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Saying what really needs to be said is important, but talking too much easily leads to saying what should not be said.

From the different quotations of Apostle Peter in the gospels, it seems that he was a talkative person by nature. In one instance at least, Peter’s verbosity was ill-advised. While on the mount of transfiguration, Peter says to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what to say . . .)” (Mark 9:5–6). Here, we notice that Peter “did not know what to say,” so, of course, he said something! This is exactly what talkative people do. It is amazing how God rapidly silenced Peter by redirecting his focus: “A cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: ‘This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!’” (Mark 9:7). Notice that Peter’s talking had to be replaced with listening.

What The Scriptures Say

We are made to understand by the Scriptures that just as the overly talkative person displays foolishness, the one who holds his tongue demonstrates knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 17:27 says, “He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.” We can’t gain knowledge if we are constantly talking, but understanding comes from listening and using our words sparingly. James 1:19 says, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak . . .

Helpful Prayer To Stop Talking Too Much

As Christians, it is important for us to understand that talking too much is detrimental to our witness in the world, as Apostle James reminds us, “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless” (James 1:26). Apostle James later says that controlling the tongue is one of the hardest things to do, humanly speaking (James 3:2). In fact, “no human being can tame the tongue” (James 3:7). Amazingly, we have the Holy Spirit to help us with the task, and here is a Helpful Prayer To Stop Talking Too Much: “Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3).

Let Your Words Be Few Proverbs

Let Your Words Be Few Proverbs

Let Your Words Be Few Proverbs.

Let Your Words Be Few Proverbs

Proverbs About Talking Too Much

Discover the Proverbs About Talking Too Much.

Proverbs About Talking Too Much

What Does The Bible Say About Fools Speaking

What Does The Bible Say About Fools Speaking?

Prayer To Stop Talking Too Much

Discover a Powerful and Helpful Prayer To Stop Talking Too Much.

Powerful Prayer To Stop Talking Too Much

As Christians, it is important for us to understand that talking too much is detrimental to our witness in the world, as Apostle James reminds us, “If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless” (James 1:26). Apostle James later says that controlling the tongue is one of the hardest things to do, humanly speaking (James 3:2). In fact, “no human being can tame the tongue” (James 3:7). Amazingly, we have the Holy Spirit to help us with the task, and here is a Helpful And Powerful Prayer To Stop Talking Too Much: “Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3).

What The Scriptures Say

Why You Should Stop Talking Too Much

We are made to understand by the Scriptures that just as the overly talkative person displays foolishness, the one who holds his tongue demonstrates knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 17:27 says, “He who has knowledge spares his words, and a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.” We can’t gain knowledge if we are constantly talking, but understanding comes from listening and using our words sparingly. James 1:19 says, “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak . . .

What Does The Bible Say About Talking Too Much

What Does The Bible Say About Talking Too Much?

What Does The Bible Say About Talking Too Much?

What Does The Bible Say About Speaking Bad Words? James 3:10 says, “From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.Luke 6:28 says, “Bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” Romans 12:14 says, “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.” Luke 6:27 says, “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,Psalm 109:17 says, “He loved to curse; let curses come upon him! He did not delight in blessing; may it be far from him!Psalm 109:18 says, “He clothed himself with cursing as his coat; may it soak into his body …” James 5:12 says, “But above all, my brothers, do not swear, …Proverbs 18:21 says, “The tongue has the power of life and death.” Profanity is negative, hurtful, and amounts to verbal abuse.

We regard verbal abuse as one weapon in the arsenal of emotional abuse. Though the tactics of abuse are numerous, the main goal is to gain control over someone in order to prove a point or establish dominance in a relationship. Verbal abuse constitutes psychological violence and it is a habitual sin that seldom goes away on its own and can potentially escalate to physical abuse. Some examples of overt verbal abuse include swearing, name-calling, angry outbursts, screaming, blaming, ridicule, criticism, accusation, orders, threats, manipulation, mockery, put-downs, coercion, word twisting, shaming, attacking personal character, and rewriting history. On the other hand, covert verbal abuse is more subtle and cloaks hidden aggression. It feigns concern and has the effect of leaving the victim brainwashed, confused, off-balance, and questioning his/her abilities as well as worth.

What Does The Bible Say About Speaking Bad Words?

Luke 6:28 says, “Bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.” Likewise, Romans 12:14 says, “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.” These Scriptures clearly call on Christians to avoid the use of cursing words irrespective of the situation. As followers of Christ, we should reflect His love to the world even when we are being persecuted, cheated, insulted or wrongly accused. The Bible calls on us to pray for those who abuse us and not curse them. Romans 12:19 says, “Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the LORD.” Beloved, in all things, let’s put our trust in God. And knowing that God is in control, we should avoid the use of bad/abusive language.

Truthfully speaking, any kind of abuse made over a long term can leave the victim in a depressed state, unable to make decisions, and drained of any sense of personhood, worth, or value. In such a case, the victim begins to accept the blame and believe the crushing words that are convincingly and repeatedly thrown at him. You’re just deceiving yourself if you think that words can never hurt you. Behold, abusive language has a deep, long-lasting effect that can “pierce like swords” (Proverbs 12:18). Luke 6:45 says, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”

Is It A Sin To Swear, Cuss, Or Curse?

The Bible makes it clear that swearing and cussing or cursing are sinful. Ephesians 4:29 says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Likewise, 1 Peter 3:10 says, “For, whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech.” In summary, James 3:9-12 says, “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

The Biblical analogy of both salt water and fresh water coming from the same spring (which is uncharacteristic of springs) portrays the point that it is uncharacteristic for a believer to have both praise and cursing come from his/her mouth. That is, we cannot praise God at the same time cursing others made in His likeness. In the same light, Jesus Christ tells us in Matthew 5:34-37 that we should not swear an oath at all. Jesus makes us understand that what comes out of our mouths is what feels our hearts. Sooner or later, the evil in the heart comes out through cursing and swearing. But when our hearts are filled with God’s goodness, praise for Him and love for others will pour forth.

What Makes Cursing And Swearing Sinful?

Swearing and/or cursing are sinful because sin is a condition of the heart, the mind, and “the inner man” (Romans 7:22), which is manifested in our thoughts, words, and actions. Swearing and cursing are actually giving evidence of the polluting sin in our hearts that must be confessed and repented of. The Bible tells us that by putting our faith in Jesus Christ, we obtain a new nature from God (2 Corinthians 5:17), our hearts are renewed, and our speech reflects the new nature that God has created in us (Romans 12:1–2). Thankfully, when we fail, the Lord God Almighty is “faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Is It Wrong To Swear To God?

While some people think that swearing to God is something that can be done in some particular circumstances, others strongly condemn the act and even consider it sinful. However, we should all pray and trust God to lead us by His Spirit to doing just that which is right and pleasing to Him. In support of this point, we can read from John 16:13 – “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” As previously mentioned, some people are of the viewpoint that using the phrase I swear to God may be right or wrong depending on the context.

Those who think that the use of the phrase I swear to God may be right or wrong depending on the context generally support or don’t find anything wrong with the act of placing the hand on a Bible and swearing before God to tell the truth when called to witness in a court of law. For them, the invocation of God’s Word is meant to make the one testifying soberly aware of God’s presence, as God’s honor and righteousness are held as standard. However, in other cases, the phrase “I swear to God” is used as a tagline or in jest, and the character or personality of God is never even considered. This is considered wrong and very similar to the common flippant used today “Oh, my God!” However, remember that Jesus Himself said that we should not swear an oath at all (Matthew 5:34-37).

You Shall Not Take The Name Of The Lord Your God In Vain

Remember one of the ten commandments that says “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain” (Exodus 20:7). With this in mind, we should avoid the disrespectful use of God’s name through phrases or expressions that show that we have very little awareness of God’s Mightiness. Using God’s name as a swear word (“God, no, I won’t do that!”) is one of the ways we take His name in vain. In the same light, we should not invoke God’s name at the end of outrageous statements, as though tossing His name into the mix makes our words more credible. We should avoid saying things like, “it was the most beautiful bird I’ve ever seen! I swear to God!” For such is a flippant use of God’s name.

Avoid saying “I swear to God,” and the use of similar expressions like “God’s honest truth” or “God as my witness.” Jesus Christ clearly taught on this subject matter as we can read from Matthew 5:33–37 – “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.’ But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No ,’ ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” As a Christian, let your YES be YES and your NO be NO.

What Does The Scriptures Say About Abusive/Negative Language?

Matthew 5:21–22 openly categorizes verbal abuse as a major offense with eternal or everlasting consequences: “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ [an Aramaic term of contempt meaning “worthless, empty”] is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.” Following this Scripture, we can say that God’s heart on the subject of how we make use of our words is evident in Scripture. In fact, God is concerned about how we make use of words. As followers of Christ, we should be more focused on using words to build than destroy.

When we have hurt others with our words, we can sincerely repent and find forgiveness in God and should as well seek it from those we have hurt. And those who have been victims of serious verbal abuse can find true healing in Jesus Christ. Behold, He is the Mighty Healer and is willing to heal you from all forms of pain and equally restore your joy. While in search of healing from abuse, you can discuss with your pastor or fellow Christians who will encourage and accompany you through the whole process. God’s desire is that we “encourage one another and build each other up” (1 Thessalonians 5:11) and that we “do not let any unwholesome talk come out of [our] mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs” (Ephesians 4:29). In Christ, our words should be loving, encouraging, healthy, and life-giving.

More On The Power Of Words

Words have power. Remember that God used His Word (Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24) to create the entire universe and Jesus Himself is called the Word of God (John 1:1, 14). Genesis 1:1-31 says, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. …” Likewise, Hebrews 11:3 says, “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, ...” In addition, John 1:1-1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” And because we were created in God’s likeness, God wants us to make good use of our words.
