I Am A New Creation In Christ. The new creation is clearly described in 2 Corinthians 5:17: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” Apostle Paul in verses 14-16 tells us that all believers have died for Christ and no longer live for themselves. That is, our lives are no longer worldly; they are now spiritual. Our “death” is that of the old sin nature that was nailed to the cross at Calvary with Christ. Behold, it was buried with Him, and just as He was raised up by the Father, so are we raised up to “walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). The new person that was raised up with and in Christ is what Apostle Paul refers to in 2 Corinthians 5:17 as the “new creation.”
In an effort to understand what the new creation is all about, we must first grasp that it is in fact a creation, something created by God Almighty. John 1:13 says that this new birth was brought about by the will of God. We did not decide to recreate ourselves to our likeness. Neither did God just clean up our old nature; He created something entirely unique and fresh. We can say of the new creation that it is completely new, brought about from nothing, in the same way, that the entire universe was created by God Almighty, from nothing. Only the Creator could successfully accomplish such a feat. In talking of old things that have passed away, the old refers to everything that is part of our old nature —natural pride, love of sin, reliance on works, and our former opinions, habits, and passions.
I Am A New Creation In Christ
Today, we can rejoice and thank God because “old things have passed away.” Most significantly, what we loved has passed away, especially the supreme love of self and with it self-righteousness, self-justification, and self-promotion. We are able to live a new life in Christ thanks to God’s unfailing love and grace for His creatures. Here, the new creature looks outwardly toward Christ instead of inwardly toward self. Along with the old passing away, “the new has come!” Thus, we can say with confidence that the old, dead things are replaced with new things, full of life and the glory of God Almighty. The newborn soul delights in the things of God and abhors the things of the flesh and those of the world. In this new nature, our purpose, desires, feelings, and understanding are fresh and different. We see the world differently and have a goal to please God.
In our new natures, we can better appreciate the goodness, love, and mercy of God. In the same light, our praises and worships are pleasing to Him. The things around us testify to his goodness, unfailing love, and protection. We feel different and develop new feelings toward all people – a new kind of love toward family and friends, a new compassion never before felt for enemies, a new love for all mankind, and the desire to see others giving their lives to Christ for salvation. The earthly things that we once loved, we now detest. The sin that we once held onto, we now desire to put away forever. In Christ, we “put off the old man with his deeds” (Colossians 3:9), and put on the “new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (Ephesians 4:24).
What the Scriptures say
There is much that the Scriptures say about the New Creation. However, the New Creation is a concept found in the New Testament, related to the New Life and New Man but with references also to the Old Testament book of Genesis “Old Creation.” We were created by God Almighty to serve and worship Him as we can read from Ephesians 2:10, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” God is a Creator. In His might, He created the Heavens and the Earth and everything in them out of nothing (Genesis 1:1-31). He said, “‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (v. 3). We understand that it is in this same way that God creates spiritual life and light in the hearts of men, making their hearts receptive to His Voice (Ezekiel 36:26).
The new life is brought about by the regeneration process that occurs by the Spirit of God (John 3:5-8). The regenerated person believes in Christ, is in Christ, loves Christ, lives for Christ, carries his/her cross, and follows Christ on a daily basis, at which point he/she has become a “new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Such a person is a new entity, the same way that a newborn baby is a new person. Behold, the old self has gone away, and the new self has arrived. Becoming a new creation through the process of regeneration is not a mystery. There is nothing frightening about it. When Adam and Eve sinned, human beings lost their close connection to God. In simple terms, regeneration restores that connection, making it possible for God’s Spirit to live within us and flow through us as it was meant to.
What about born again Christians who continue to sin?
The Christian journey is not without challenges. The flesh, and mind, are influenced by Satan, and by the world, and by its own habits built over a lifetime. The flesh fights the “new man” that is created. This creates conflict within (Romans 7:14-23) that the unregenerated person does not experience. There is a difference between continuing to sin and continuing to live in sin. The new creation is no longer a slave to sin. Sin no longer has power over us (Romans 6:6-7). We now have the choice to “let sin reign” or to count ourselves “dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Romans 6:11-12). Best of all, now we have the power to choose the latter. No one reaches sinless perfection in this life, but the redeemed Christian is being sanctified (made holy) day by day, sinning less and hating it more each time he fails.
God delivers us over time from this “body of death” and does not condemn us when we lose the fight with the flesh (Romans 7:24-8:1). Rather, He continually works on those He has regenerated. We are in a constant state of re-creation (Hebrews 10:14) until we reach heaven and we are glorified, no longer to struggle with sin (Romans 8:30). In our new natures, we begin to love and crave for the things of the Spirit, and to reject those things that He has rejected. “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Galatians 5:22–23). The newborn soul wants the things of God in fullness. Born again Christians still sin and fail, but the result is different. Instead of satisfaction, the new creation feels disappointed after indulging in sin and turns to God for mercy.

2 Corinthians 5:17-21 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Romans 6:1-23 – “What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. …“
Ezekiel 11:19-20 – “And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God.“
Ephesians 4:22-24 – “To put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.”

What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, “I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.”“
1 Peter 3:18-22 – “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.”

I will rejoice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the young man shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed. They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. …“

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
