A Man Of Character In The Bible

A Man Of Character In The Bible is one whose heart is after the Will of God. Several men and women throughout history have spoken at length about what the Bible says about a person’s character. There is much to discover about the importance of having an upright character especially for those who serve in any type of leadership capacity. A simple search for character and leadership yields thousands of books, quotes, and speeches. As Christians, character is so important to us that we even recognize it as one of the principal requirements of trust, and trust is an essential prerequisite for all meaningful relationships. It is without a doubt that most people would never consider following someone with a past filled with dubious moral or ethical choices.

So, what is Character? In simple terms, a person’s character is who they really are. Character is defined as strength of moral fiber. A.W. Tozer described character as “the excellence of moral beings.” That is, as the excellence of gold is its purity and the excellence of art is its beauty, so the excellence of man is his character. Persons of character are noted for their ethics, honesty, and charity. Descriptions such as “man of principle” and “woman of integrity” are assertions of character. A lack of character is pointing to moral deficiency, and persons lacking character tend to behave unethically, dishonestly, and uncharitably. Abraham Lincoln once said, “Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing.”

Your reputation is what others think of you, which may or may not be true, but your character is who you really are. Your character is the real you.

A Man Of Character In The Bible

We can say of a person’s character that it is the sum of his or her thoughts, disposition, intentions, actions, and desires. Note that character is gauged by general tendencies, not on the basis of a few isolated actions. It is the whole life that we are to look at. Remember that King David was a man of good character (1 Samuel 13:14) although he sinned on occasion (2 Samuel 11). And although King Ahab may have acted nobly once (1 Kings 22:35), he was still a man of overall bad character (1 Kings 16:33). Many people in the Bible are described as having noble character: Ruth (Ruth 3:11), Hanani (Nehemiah 7:2), David (Psalm 78:72), and Job (Job 2:3). Behold, their lives were distinguished by persistent moral virtue.

Note that our character is influenced and developed by our choices. Daniel “resolved not to defile himself” in Babylon (Daniel 1:8), and that godly choice was an important step in formulating unassailable integrity in his life. Character, in turn, influences our choices. “The integrity of the upright guides them” (Proverbs 11:3a). In fact, character will help us weather the storms of life and keep us from sin (Proverbs 10:9a). It is the Lord’s purpose to develop character within us. “The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart” (Proverbs 17:3). Godly character results from the Holy Spirit’s work of sanctification.

What Do the Scriptures say about the Character and Attitude of a Man?

Character in the believer is a consistent manifestation of Jesus Christ in his life. It is the purity of heart that God gives through Christ becoming purity in action. It is worth pointing out that God sometimes uses trials to strengthen character: “we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4). The Lord God Almighty is pleased when His children grow in character. “You test the heart and are pleased with integrity” (1 Chronicles 29:17; also read Psalm 15:1-2). As Christians, we can develop godly character by controlling our thoughts (Philippians 4:8), guarding our hearts (Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 15:18-20), practicing Christian virtues (2 Peter 1:5-6), and keeping good company (1 Corinthians 15:33). Men and women of godly character will set a good example for others to follow, and their godly reputation will be evident to all (Titus 2:7-8).

Everyone has a “public” face and a “private” face. Most of us tend to act with better behavior around others than we do in private. It is without a doubt that if you enter a retail store and notice sophisticated video surveillance equipment, you’ll obviously pay attention to what you do because someone might be watching you. There are many stories of people being caught on camera doing rueful acts. Although sad, it is true that video cameras reveal what we all know: that a person’s real character is who they are when they think no one is looking. The British writer and politician Thomas Macauly (1800-1859) once said, “The measure of a man’s character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out.

Understanding the character of a Christian man

Character is the aggregate of a person’s ethical and moral qualities, and it is demonstrated through the different choices that we make. So, a person of good character is someone who acts morally and ethically upright. It is without a doubt that we are all a mixture of both good and bad. Thus, we are not saying that to have a “good” character a person never makes any missteps. Rather, he is someone who is always striving to take the moral high road and, when he recognizes that he has done something wrong, he does what is necessary to get back on track.

The list of “high value” character traits (those virtues we esteem) is extensive and includes such things as integrity, honor, courage, honesty, and fortitude. In addition to the many noble traits there are, we Christians would also want to make sure that we are pursuing those virtues that God espouses. Certainly, this list for us would incorporate the distinguishing qualities of love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and humility. In fact, it has been said that the fruit of the spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22 (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,) and 23a (gentleness and self-control…) represent the character of Christ. The type of character you have is your choice. Thus, “Your character is the sum total of your life choices.” If we make poor choices, such as lying, stealing, or laziness, then we have a poor character.

We might not have a choice regarding the situation that we are facing but we have a choice on how to respond to it. In the face of frustration or disappointment, we can choose to respond with anger or patience. The choice is always ours and that’s why our character is always a matter of our choice, thus our responsibility.

Five (05) Characteristics of a Godly Man

1. Stand Strong

A godly man is expected to stand strong and hold fast to the truth of his Heavenly Father that was revealed through Jesus Christ even in the face of challenges, attacks, hatred, persecutions, criticisms, and sufferings.
Now behold, I have made you today as a fortified city and as a pillar of iron and as walls of bronze against the whole land, to the kings of Judah, to its princes, to its priests, and to the people of the land. They will fight against you, but they will not overcome you, for I am with you to deliver you,” declares the LORD. – Jeremiah 1:18-19

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.” – 1 Peter 5:8-9
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.” – I Corinthians 15:58

2. Step Up

It is expected of a Christian man to be a leader. Also, he is to initiate, be a man of action, assume that it is his job and the moment to do it, hate apathy and reject passivity.
When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army, the mighty men…”Be strong, and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and for the cities of our God; and may the LORD do what is good in His sight.” – 2 Samuel 10:7,12
I searched for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land, so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one.” – Ezekiel 22:30

3. Speak Out

It is said that silence in the midst of sin is a sin. A Christian man is expected to be courageous enough to stand for what is right. Speak the truth in love and fear God, not man.
But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence.” – 1 Peter 3:15
Better is open rebuke than love that is concealed. Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.” – Proverbs 27:5-6
Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all the unfortunate. Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the afflicted and needy.” – Proverbs 31:8-9

4. Stay Humble

As Christians, we’ve been called to be vigilant against pride. Don’t think less of yourself; think of yourself less.
You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:5-7
Let the righteous smite me in kindness and reprove me; it is oil upon the head; do not let my head refuse it, for still my prayer is against their wicked deeds.” – Psalm 141:5

5. Serve the King

It is expected of us to think first of God’s Kingdom, His Glory, and His Righteousness. We are to live for a greater reward while maintaining hope in the eternal.
But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45
