Bible Verses About False Prophets

Behold, there are many Bible Verses About False Prophets worth knowing. Having read this, you might want to know who is a false prophet. In simple terms, a false prophet is someone who propagates false teachings or messages while claiming to speak the word of God. The Bible also tells us how false prophets spoke on the behalf of false gods. Perhaps you are wondering what motivates them. The truth is that false prophets operate in the prophetic role illegitimately or for the purpose of deception. The Bible denounces false prophets for leading God’s people astray and cautions us against them. Although the term false prophet does not actually appear in the Old Testament, references to false prophets are evident and abundant.

The Biblical Book of Prophet Jeremiah clearly describes the nature of false prophets: “Then the LORD said to me, ‘The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I have not sent them or appointed them or spoken to them. They are prophesying to you false visions, divinations, idolatries and the delusions of their own minds’” (Jeremiah 14:14; also read 23:21–33Zechariah 10:2). The primary or main difference between true prophets of God like Jeremiah and false prophets like Hananiah (Jeremiah 28) is their source of information. Rather than delivering the Word of God, false prophets speak messages that originate from their hearts, minds, and emotions which are often influenced by evil spirits. Behold, God distances Himself from all false prophets as we can read from Jeremiah 23:21 – “I did not send these prophets, yet they have run with their message; I did not speak to them, yet they have prophesied.”

Bible Verses About False Prophets

False prophets deceive you to believe that they are speaking in the name of the Lord God Almighty but what they utter comes from their minds: “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Do not listen to what the prophets are prophesying to you, they fill you with false hopes. They speak visions from their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD’” (Jeremiah 23:16; also read 14:14; 23:25–32Ezekiel 13:1–7). Another significant difference between false prophets and true prophets is their motivation. The Bible tells us that true prophets are motivated by genuine loyalty to God above else. On the other hand, false prophets are motivated by selfishness, self-interest, and the desire to become popular among the people (1 Kings 22:13–14).

It is rather unfortunate that while Prophet Jeremiah foretold the grim truth about the upcoming desolation upon Jerusalem (Jeremiah 4), the false prophets promised peace (Jeremiah 6:14; 8:11). As usual, the people of Judah chose the pleasant messages of the false prophets: “Don’t tell us what is right. Tell us nice things. Tell us lies” (Isaiah 30:10). We are made to understand that in most cases, the false prophets were hired for payment or spoke their false messages for financial gain: “Her leaders judge for a bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the LORD’s support and say, ‘Is not the LORD among us? No disaster will come upon us’” (Micah 3:11; also read Nehemiah 6:12–13Jeremiah 6:13–14Ezekiel 13:192 Peter 2:1–3).

What does the Scripture say about False Prophets?

The Scripture says much about false prophets. It is rather unfortunate that Israel had difficulties in discerning between a true and a false prophet. Luckily enough, the Biblical Book of Deuteronomy teaches us about the two signs of a true prophet. First, a true prophet of God Almighty must never direct God’s people to follow other gods. Second, when a true Prophet speaks what he hears from God concerning future events, it will always come to pass except God changes His mind (Jonah 3:10). We can say without doubt that God always backup His prophets and never allows their words to fall on the ground without a reason. However, God remains the sovereign ruler and sole decision maker as per the realization of His words through His prophets. Behold, God is not a respecter of men but does as He likes.

God commanded Prophet Jonah to proclaim His message: “In forty days Nineveh would be destroyed for its wicked and evil ways” (Jonah 3:4). Upon hearing this prophecy, the King sent out a message to forbid anyone (including himself) and even the animals from eating. He invited his subjects to join him in a period of fasting and prayer so that God could see that they had turned from their sins and wicked ways and choose not to bring the punishment of the prophecy. Behold, the Scripture tells us that God saw the Sincerity of their hearts and changed His mind about the punishment He had previously reserved for them (Jonah 3:10). The fact that the prophecy did not come to pass does not make Jonah a false prophet for he actually heard from God. God even rebuked Jonah for questioning Him about the prophecy not coming to pass (Jonah 4:4).

Facts about false prophets and true prophets

Given that God rebuked Jonah for questioning Him about the unfulfilled prophecy (Jonah 4:4), we are not very OK with the saying that “if a prophet’s prediction fail to come to pass, he is a false prophet.” A true prophet of God can proclaim a message that God has not spoken (Deuteronomy 18:22) but has allowed it to happen so (read 1 King 22:20 -25 ). What of Jonah’s case were God changed His mind about fulfilling the prophecy? (Jonah 3:10). Instead of focusing on judging God’s servants, let’s allow their master to bring judgement on them. Our focus should rather be on maintaining faithfulness and an obedient heart to the commands of God and the Key Teachings of Jesus Christ.

It is true that the punishment specified for false prophets in the Old Testament was severe: “If any prophet dares to speak a message in My name that I have not commanded him to speak, or to speak in the name of other gods, that prophet must be put to death” (Deuteronomy 18:20). With this in mind, came the struggle among the children of Israel to figure out false prophets from true prophets. This struggle instead led them to stoning and killing almost all the true prophets that God sent. Prophet Isaiah said, they were not willing to hear the truth but had itching ears to hear false prophecies about peace and prosperity whereas God was speaking destruction to them for their evil ways (Isaiah 30:10). Every true prophet who proclaimed the truth of God stood a risk of being stoned to death as pointed out by Jesus (Matthew 23:29-36).

What you should know about false prophets

The Scripture describes false prophets as adulterous (Jeremiah 23:14), drunkards (Isaiah 28:7), treacherous (Zephaniah 3:4), liars (Jeremiah 14:14; 23:14), wicked (Jeremiah 23:11), and associated with witchcraft and divination ( Ezekiel 22:28; Jeremiah 14:14; Acts 13:6). Jesus Christ Himself cautioned us against false prophets in Matthew 7:15–18 – “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.”

Jesus went forth to explain the consequences of being a false prophet in Matthew 7:19–23 – “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’” As followers of Christ, we should study the Scriptures on a daily basis and master them in order to grow spiritually thereby equipping ourselves against false prophets and teachers (2 Peter 1:101:19—2:11 John 4:1).
