Paul and Silas Summary (Acts 16:16-40)

The story of Paul and Silas in Prison too place at Philippi. They were on the way to the prayer place when they encountered a girl with an evil spirit. The evil spirit in her was one that gave her the supernatural ability of seeing the future. This made her to become a fortune teller at the command of certain men in the city who were using her to make money. It so happened that she began following Paul and his companion. While following them, she was saying at the top of her voice that “these men are from God, listen to them and be saved”.

This continued for days and at some point in time, Paul got upset about her following them and shouting. And as a result, Paul turned to her and commanded the evil spirit to leave in the name of Jesus Christ. At once, the evil spirit left the girl and she became quiet. When the evil spirit left her, she could no longer see into the future nor operate as a fortuneteller. The news quickly reached her owners who were mad at Paul and Silas. They wanted to kill them but out of fear, they did not.

However, they dragged Paul and Silas to the public square for trial before the Roman Officials. Upon meeting the Roman Officials, they reported that Paul and Silas were caught in the very act of planting disorder and trouble around the whole city. They further added that the two men were teaching strange and forbidden doctrines which are against their law.

Worth noting is that the public joined in the accusations against Paul and Silas before the Roman Officials. They accused Paul and Silas of things they did not do.

Paul and his companion in Jail

The accusations were so heavy and convincing that the Roman Officials did not look any further. At the spot, they concluded that Paul and Silas were guilty and deserved punishment. As a result, they had them severely beaten and wounded. As if this was not sufficient, Paul and Silas were thrown into jail with chains binding their hands and feet.

At midnight, Paul and Silas were singing hymns and praising God. Their praises touched God’s heart who could not allow his faithful servants in pains under heavy chains within prison walls. As a result, God immediately sent and Angel of Liberation to free them. It is written in the scriptures that there was a sudden Earthquake which was so intense that all prison doors were broken. When the jailer woke up, he drew a sword to kill himself thinking that the prisoners had all escaped. The Jailer led them out and asked what he must do to be saved and entitled to everlasting life. Paul and Silas told him that he needed to believe in Jesus Christ.
